Secondary School - Y7 to Y11 (GCSE)
The aims of all my courses are to ensure, first and foremost, that my students enjoy learning French, speak throughout the lesson, and leave the class feeling confident and buoyed up.
This is especially important for secondary school students, not least at GCSE level, when they are under so much pressure to “perform” under test or exam conditions that they feel overwhelmed and stressed.
With just one hour a week, I do cover all of the syllabus from Y7 to Y11: several of my students have achieved grades 7 to 9 without attending a French class other than mine, once a week during term time.
Grammar is at the core of all my courses and students retain key grammatical concepts and verbs by acting out key scenes and doing pair work. I focus especially on speaking, essay writing and listening skills. We work on reading comprehension more intensively prior to the exam in Y11.
My syllabus is generally ahead of both state and private schools as I like to ensure I teach the students anything new first and what they study at school becomes revision, consolidation and gives them confidence. If something is introduced at school and the students have any difficulties, I’ll alter my plans to ensure I cover the work on the spot. I prepare students for AQA, Edexcel and IGCSE.

A Level and Pre-U
With just one hour a week, I supplement the A level syllabus taught at school so the focus of lessons will depend on the students’ needs and weaknesses. I do find that in general, we work on essay writing on their assigned book and film and I bring some of the topics they have to study to life through videos. Oral work is also absolutely key and I cover all the grammar needed for A level.
Films I am particularly familiar with:
La Haine
Les 400 coups
Texts:
L’Etranger
Un Sac de Billes
No et Moi
Kiffe Kiffe Demain.
I last taught Pre-U in 2017 but have kept teaching both Edexcel and AQA A levels.
